“The Eastern Guild is willing to lend half their force,” Lieutenant Lee Carter said, glancing up at the people who had joined him around the map on the table.
“Why would they do that?” Wyatt Cain asked sharply, looking up from the map also.
The corners of Carter’s lips turned up as he looked at the young girl standing next to Cain. “Something about wanting to make up for stringing up the Queen’s youngest daughter,” he said. His smile widened when DG looked up from the map also with her own grin lighting up her face. “I think they want to make amends,” Carter continued, looking back at Cain. The smile that had taken up residence on his face fell with the glare that Cain was giving him.
“It’s been over a year,” DG said, glancing back and forth between Cain and Carter. “Why now?”
Again, Carter chanced a smile in her direction, but this one was much more forced. “The fact that the Longcoats are setting up camps on the borders of their territory is swaying their decision. They’re lookin’ for help, Princess.”
DG paused for only a moment, the dignitary in her coming forward, before responding. “And we’ll give it to them. All of the people of the O.Z. share a common enemy. Everyone deserves our protection.”
“Of course, Princess,” Carter replied, bowing his head slightly. “However, our forces are vastly depleted. The Longcoats were expecting our last raid. We lost a lot of good men.”
“I understand that Lieutenant, but by sending in men to the Eastern Guild, we’re essentially killing two birds with one stone.” Cain and Lee looked at her, confusion covering their faces. “We get rid of the faction of Longcoats there and the Easter Guild sends more men. Out that far, the Longcoats can’t be well armed or well positioned. If we send in our-”
The princess was cut off by the sound of the door to the office they were occupying being opened with a bang. A young man, only a few years younger than DG, was panting and holding out his arm to force a piece of paper towards Cain, who had immediately moved to the door when it had been forced open.
“Thank you, Jack,” Cain said, snatching the paper from the boy. “Get some rest.”
The young man bowed towards the princess and then turned to leave. His escape was blocked by the arrival of the Queen’s Royal Advisor, Ambrose, and the Queen’s Royal Liaison to the Viewers, Raw. The young man bowed to them as well before finally exiting the room.
“Glitch!” the princess exclaimed, flinging her arms around the advisor’s neck. Glitch laughed, hugging her back and pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
“How goes the defense planning?” he asked, looking towards the map and reading a few of the papers that were still strewn along the table.
“They’re going,” DG replied. “Not well, but they’re going. We’ve got support from the Northern, Western and Eastern Guilds, the last of which needs our help before they can help us. So we’re sending in some of our troops.” The last of this was said with a sigh and DG cast her eyes to the floor.
“DG make hard decision,” Raw said, placing his hand on her shoulder. “But good one.”
“Thanks, Raw,” DG said, a half smile coming back to her face. The smile dropped when she heard Cain call her over.
“Princess, you should take a look at this,” he said, handing her the sheet of paper.
DG spent a minute looking over the communication. When she got to the end, her eyes shot up to find Cain’s. “A travel storm?” she asked. “But we restricted the use of those, didn’t we? You have to have a permit and we track them.”
“Longcoats must be jumping,” Carter said, looking over DG’s shoulder to read the paper. “Princess, this storm wasn’t far from the boundaries of the castle. I can have men out within the hour.”
“Do it,” DG said, dignitary-voice back on. “And I want to go also.” She held up her hand to stop Cain from arguing. “No, Cain. The Longcoats are known for landing their travel storms on civilian territory on the Other Side. If they did go over, no telling what damage was done. If I’m there, I can use my magic to see what they did. I already have people over here dying, I don’t need people over there dying. Not on my watch.”
“Princess, there’s always the chance they’re coming back through in that same spot,” Cain started.
“Good,” DG interrupted. “We can catch ‘em then.”
“I’ll have the team assembled in an hour, Princess,” Carter said, bowing to her before leaving the room quickly. He knew better than to stick around when he knew that the princess was about to get an earful from Cain.
Glitch and Raw both knew what was coming also and quickly bid their goodbyes and left. They both looked at each other before looking back at the room, knowing that whatever was coming was going to be big.
As soon as Raw and Glitch had left, Cain had shut the door to the office. His hands were clenched into tight balls and he had to control his breathing. The force of his anger was hidden behind bright, blue eyes. He turned back towards DG, intent on giving her a piece of his mind. He wasn’t expecting her to be right in front of him when he turned around.
“Princess,” he started, taking a step back, only to find the door that he had just closed was pressing into his back.
“Yes, Mr. Cain?” DG asked, moving her body closer, pressing herself against his broad chest.
“DG,” Cain tried again. He grabbed her upper arms to stop her forward movement. “You know I can’t let you go out there, Princess,” he said, blue eyes meeting blue.
“Can’t? Or won’t, Mr. Cain?” she asked, bringing her hands to his chest and moving up.
Cain had to hold back a groan at the feel of her small hands before answering. “Does it matter? You’re not going,” he said with a growl.
DG laughed lightly, standing on her tiptoes to bring her mouth next to his ear. “Oh really?” she said softly, before she started nibbling on Cain’s earlobe. Cain’s eyes rolled back into his head and he didn’t even try to hold back the groan that rose from the bottom of his chest. The grip on DG’s upper arms tightened and he brought her even closer to himself.
Her lips moved from his ear to the spot just below it and she kissed lightly before moving down his jaw. Her kisses were light as air and were driving Cain crazy, just like they always did. So he did what any self respecting male would do in his situation. He turned the tables on her. He used his grip on her arms to swing her around until it was she that was pinned against the door. He pressed himself against her, making sure she felt exactly what her kisses had done to him.
Cain knew this was probably a bad idea, to be doing this here and now, but he wanted her. Hell, he always wanted her, but he could usually wait until it was late and the rest of the palace was asleep. Wait until they were in the privacy of her bedchambers and the door was locked and she had thrown up a silencing spell a moment before he made her scream. But the way DG had taken charge today, ordering that Carter send in the troops, the way she had expressed her feelings about keeping her people safe, had made his heart swell with pride and another part of his anatomy swell with something else.
He took the same path she’d taken along the side of his face, starting with the spot below her ear, which he knew to be much more sensitive than his. His kiss was rewarded with a sharp gasp and a shudder that ran along her whole body. The hands on her arms moved down to grab her hands and press them against the door above her head. His lips quickly found hers and he kissed her with a bruising force. DG bucked her hips against his and he groaned into her mouth. He used his left hand to hold hers above her head and his right came down to cup her breast.
“I love it when you get regal, Princess,” Cain whispered against her lips as he ground against her, making her whimper, the sound lost against his lips. He would never tire of kissing her; she was like a drug. The hand on her breast moved lower, pressing in between their lower halves. He didn’t bother dipping into the waistband of her jeans, instead he pressed against her sex through the cloth, eliciting yet another moan from her. He would have to make this fast lest someone discover them. He finally let go of her hands and brought his left hand down to aid in the removal of her trousers.
DG still insisted on wearing those ridiculous pants. It wasn’t that she had a problem wearing the dresses, she just felt infinitely more comfortable in the jeans she had made the palace tailor fashion for her. And Cain certainly didn’t have a problem with her wearing pants. She’d made a comment to him once about how much she loved his pants because of how tight they were and how well they showed off certain ass-ets and he’d surprised her by returning the sentiments. She’d taken to wearing the tightest pair of jeans she owned whenever she was around him.
Cain’s nimble fingers had no problems popping the little button at the top of her jeans and sliding the zipper down. DG’s hands had found their way to the waistband of Cain’s own pants and were quickly undoing the buttons there. They both knew this would be fast and hard, so they only bothered removing only the necessary clothes. Shirts stayed in place and only one of DG’s shoes was removed. Even Cain’s ever present hat stayed on.
At least until Cain thrust into her. One of DG’s legs came up around Cain’s waist and he grabbed her thigh to get closer to her. His hat was knocked off when she grabbed his hair and pulled his face back to look into his eyes. Cain thrust into her over and over again, finally lifting the other leg around his waist. He could feel the drag of her jeans on the back of his thighs as the pants had never made it completely off. Cain buried his head into DG’s neck as he continued to pound into her.
He could feel her clenching around him and knew she was close. He tightened his hold on her, thrusting harder, hitting her clit on every upstroke. He let go of one thigh to bring his hand between their bodies, finding the little bundle of nerves. He stroked lightly and it was all she needed to topple over the edge. She bucked hard against him and her head slammed into the door behind her with a loud thump. He swallowed her scream as she came, slamming his lips onto hers at the last moment. Moments later he followed her over the edge.
He was still rocking into her and they were both breathing harshly as she slowly lowered her legs one at a time and he helped her as she slid down the door. They helped each other back into clothes and straightened each other out, only stopping to press chaste kisses to each other. They were both flushed and neither had quite caught their breaths. Cain planted one last kiss to DG’s lips before stepping back.
“Deege,” he said, running a hand over her hair. “I don’t want you out there. If something happened, if I couldn’t protect you….” Cain trailed off as thoughts of losing his princess flickered through his mind.
DG stepped forward and ran a hand along his cheek. “You’ll always protect me, Tin Man,” she said. “You made a promise.”
Cain laid his hand upon the one resting on his cheek, turning his face to press a kiss into the center of her palm. “That’s true,” he said with a smile. “But I still don’t like it.”
“You’re not getting your way on this, Cain,” DG said, pulling back harshly. “This is my home and I’m tired of people getting hurt and me not being able to help.”
Cain grabbed her wrist as she started to turn away from him. He pulled her to him once more, wrapping his arms around her waist. He was glad when DG’s arms found their way around his neck. “I know, Princess,” he said, kissing her once more. She sighed into his lips. He stopped them before things got too heated, pulling back with shining eyes. “If we’re going to get out there before the Longcoats decide to come back, we’d better go now. But listen here, Princess. You listen to whatever I say. If I say ‘run,’ you run back here without looking back. Don’t look out for me. You listen to whatever I say,” he said again.
DG gave him a smile before replying. “Don’t I always?” she asked, with faked innocence.
Cain snorted, grabbing her hand and pulling her out of the room. “No,” he said, looking back at her as they left the office. “But I love you anyway.”
