“We should go dancing,” she announces, her arms outstretched as she walks barefoot on the stone wall, her emerald green dress blowing in the strong wind that’s coming in from the lake.

“That’s probably not a good idea, Princess,” he says from just below her and all she can see is the top on his fedora. His eyes stare straight ahead but she knows that he could catch her in a moment if she tipped to either side.

“Please, Cain,” she half whines, tilting to the left just enough to make him reach a hand out if she needs it. “Just the five of us.”

“Five, Princess?”

“You and me,” she says, flailing a hand between them. “And Az, Glitch and Raw. The Fab Five. Big Damn Heroes,” and then she giggles and he has to suppress a small smile.

“I don’t know, Princess,” he tells her as they continue walking.

“I wish you wouldn’t call me that,” she states, stopping and turning to him. She only sees the top of his fedora as he stares at her knees. “It makes me feel small.” It’s a simple statement, one that she’s expressed before and that he’s always semi-ignored.

His head jerks up and he catches her eye; he can see the hurt in them and internally winces. “Sorry, Kid,” he says and drops his gaze back to her knees.

“That either. My name is DG. It has been since the beginning.” She turns to continue walking, but has to stop only a few feet away when she notices that he hasn’t moved.

He tilts his head back up to hers, the angle of his hat doing nothing to block the sun, so he’s half squinting as he catches her eye. “I’m sorry,” he says simply and for once she can see all of his emotions written plainly on his face.

She moves back to where he is standing, both of them never taking their eyes off the other, until she is back in front of him. She stares at him a moment and for once it is her hiding her feelings instead of him.

“Okay,” she says simply, nodding once. “Now help me down.” She reaches out her hands as she bends at her knees, resting her hands on his shoulders. She resists the urge to shiver as his wide hands rest on her waist, choosing instead to hop off the stone wall. He holds her in mid-air for a moment before effortlessly lowering her to the ground. He still hasn’t removed his gaze from her face and she has to stop herself from grinning like an idiot.

“Thanks, Cain,” she says as she finds her balance and removes her hands from his shoulders. She moves to stand back from him, intent on continuing their walk, but his hands tighten their grip on her waist. “Cain?” she asks and rests her hands on his forearms.

“I’m sorry,” he says again, stepping closer to her so she has to tilt her head back to look at him.

“I know,” she whispers, not sure what’s happening in this moment, but willing to let him take the lead.

He wants to say something more, she can tell, but he can’t seem to get the words out and his frustration in evidenced in the fact that his fingers keep gently squeezing her sides.

“Cain, its okay, really,” she tells him, worried that he’s overreacting about her statement. ‘Princess’ doesn’t really bother her that much, it just that he uses it at the most inopportune times, like when they’re enjoying a relaxing day at the lake, just the two of them and they aren’t supposed to be worrying about her being royalty and him being a guard.

“It’s not,” he says, his voice low and his eyes still haven’t left her face. “I don’t mean to do it, DG. I just -“

“Hush, Tin Man,” she whispers and her hands find their way to his face. “Its fine, I promise. I’ll just - I’ll think of it as a term of endearment.” She quirks one side of her mouth up in a half smile and he grins back at her.

“That’s what it is,” he says and he starts to lean down.

“What are you doing?” she asks as she leans her body backwards. “We’re not that far yet, Cain,” she tells him and gingerly steps out of his embrace.

“But, I thought - “

“Give it time, Cain. Take it slow.”

And with that she hops back on top of the wall and continues along the property leaving a semi-stunned Tin Man to catch up with her.
