Do you know that feeling when you feel like you've been thrown out in the middle of the ocean by yourself with no life raft or life vest...not even some floaties?
And there is no boat or land to be seen?
And you just learned to doggie-paddle but otherwise can't swim?
And you notice sharks circling below you?
And you just notice a huge cut on your leg?
And you have chum (shark bait) in your pockets?
Yeah, yesterday felt kinda like that.
So, they day was bad from the moment I got out of bed. I really didn't want to get up, but had to get moving.
Then, I got in the shower and really wanted to shave my legs, but I didn't have time.
Then, it was raining on the way to work and I didn't exceed 45 mph for the entire 30 mile commute because, let's face it, when it rains Houstonians are a bunch of f*cking morons.
Then I'm almost at work and Brian calls to tell me that the network at the Annex (the building where he works) is slow...really slow. So, I get to work and get working on that. I can't figure out what the problem is, so I call my boss to ask him. We ended up having to make a change on the network (basically negating the work that I had done the previous night for that location).
Then someone comes in with a crazy cell phone problem that not only can I not figure out, but I also can't find anything on the internet about it. So I decide to give him a spare phone. I try to swap them out by calling the carrier and they give me a bunch of sh*t, furthering my frustration that much more. I get him fixed and on his way.
While I'm fixing his cell phone, the lady from the phone company calls me (about the problem that I had earlier with the Annex) and tells me that a tech will be calling me at noon to talk about it. NOON! At this point, it's 11:20 and I haven't had lunch...and now I won't have time to have a break that I enjoy...just long enough to run and grab something and scarf it down before I have to be back. I reluctantly resolve that I must cancel my already-made lunch plans with Linda. I sit and sulk for a minute before I call her. Of all days, I really needed a good lunch today. If nothing else, just to get out of the office. I call Linda and tell her that I can't make lunch because of the dipwads at the phone company not having any consideration for lunch time. While I am on the phone with her, the lady from the phone company calls back. I hang up with Linda to switch over. Good news! They couldn't get an engineer at 12, so they will call me at 1. I thank her and tell her that now I can go to lunch. Maybe my day is turning up to be good after all now... I call Linda and she and I go grab some lunch at Monterrey's with Scott. Lunch was good.
I got back from lunch at about 12:30 and waited for them to call. A little after 1, I get a call from our "monitor boy" that one of our Dallas offices is down and he can't even ping it. I try it for myself just to verify and can't ping either. I check our dial-in router and it shows that they are apparently trying (unsuccessfully) to dial in on ISDN backup. I get with my boss again and we start working on it. A few minutes later, I am on my way upstairs to the data room with my boss and the freaking engineer from the phone company calls...he's about 40 minutes late. I run back downstairs to look at it with him. While I am on the phone with him, "monitor boy" emails me and tells me that another office (in Houston) is down. We have been having some bad weather lately, so I ask him if they have power. He gets working on contacting someone at the office to verify whether or not they have power. While I am on the phone with the engineer, the Annex goes down. Three offices down...all within 45 minutes. My boss is upstairs tinkering with and cussing at the router, trying to figure out what's going on. I get off of the phone with the engineer and go upstairs to tell my boss about the Annex being down. He tells me to call the lady from the phone company and tell her that whatever "non-intrusive testing" they were doing, they need to stop because it's bringing our routers out of service. I go downstairs and have a rather heated phone conversation with the lady and another engineer. This craziness goes on for about an hour, resulting in us having to physically reboot the routers one by one.
By 3, I am exhausted. The offices are all back up and running. I catch up on a little bit of work and head home...thinking that my "day from hell" is over.
I was so wrong.
I had a quick dinner with Casey since he was down for his interviews and he left. I logged in remotely to work on some more of the network conversion that we have been doing. Everything with my scheduled offices went smoothly.
Too smoothly.
My boss had called me and told me that he thought the problem with the Annex was fixed, so I could convert them. So, going on his advice, I decide to do so. I go in and start the conversion process. They don't come back.
Brian isn't home yet, so I call him and find out when people get there to work in the morning. The earliest group of people gets there at 6:45. Figures. So, I have to drive over there. It's 8:30. I've had the day from hell and I have to get back in my car and drive 30 miles back out to work. At this point, I am reduced to tears...if for no other reason, just out of sheer frustration. In the words of my coworker the "angry dwarf", I am two seconds from "sitting in a corner and blowing spit bubbles". I get to the Annex and do the work I need to do in order to get them working. I turn around and drive home.
I get home at about 10. Unable to do much more, I drop my purse and keys and everything and just go curl up on the couch with Brian. That was the only place I wanted to be all friggin' day and I was finally there. God help the person who tried to disturb that.
So, that was my bad day. I'm sure you are tired just reading it...
Thankfully, today was better. My boss told me last night not to "be in too big of a hurry to come in" this morning. So, I wasn't. I had a 10:00 meeting with the phone company, and I planned to be there in time for that...nothing more. In accordance with that, I got in this morning at about 9:30...two hours later than normal. I had plenty of time to get up (I slept in by about an hour), mess around a little bit on the computer, check the offices that I had converted the previous night, take a shower and shave my legs (YAY), and get myself all dolled up. I did end up having to work late today, but it wasn't so bad. Now, I'm waiting for laundry to finish so I can get us all packed up for the weekend in San Antonio. I may blog from the road if I have time, but otherwise you'll just have to wait here until I get back.
Hope everyone has a great night!
