Books 2012 update:
Travelling=Lots of reading time
#67:
Rainbow Mars by Larry Niven
Last year I decided to add more science fiction into my reading. This is the first by Larry Niven that I've read and won't be the last. It takes place on a future earth that has been nearly destroyed by pollution, animal extinction, etc. They've invented time travel and use it to bring species back from the past. They suspect that there used to be life on Mars and have been ordered to use the time machine to find out. It's about a group of people who use the machine to go back in time enough then travel to Mars and see what happened to the planet. Being a time travel story, there are consequences. It got a little technical at times, but not so much that I couldn't follow it. I enjoyed the book, and the short stories at the end that filled in some of the gaps.
#68:
The Iron Palace by Morgan Howell
This is the third book in the Shadowed Path series. It wrapped up the story nicely, and not in a way I expected. There were times when this book moved slowly. Overall I liked her orc series much better.
#69:
Hunger by Jackie Morse Kessler
This is the first in a YA series about the apocalypse riders. It's about an anorexic teenaged girl who agrees to become Famine. The book is about her trying to figure out the job and finding an acceptance of herself. It's a super quick read. I enjoyed it and hope to read the others in the series soon.
#70:
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
This is a fun book to read. At first it seemed to jump around, until you get far enough to see how everything is connected. I enjoyed it and hope to read more by him soon.
#71:
Once Bitten by Kalayna Price
I had the pleasure of meeting this author at dragon*con this year and she was super friendly. I bought this book and its sequel and read this whole book on the plane ride home. It's about a shapeshifter who takes on the form of calico cat. Early in the book she is being hunted and gets saved by, and then turned into, a vampire. She's then accused of creating a rogue shifter who's gone on a killing spree and spend the novel figuring out how to catch him. I'm guessing this book was the first one she had published. The story is good, but it lacks the punch that her Alex Craft novels have. I'm halfway through the second book and it is much better.
