i just got home from atlanta last night at 10:30 pm. although the drive home took us 12 hours, i still had the most amazing weekend! my friend stacey and i drove to atlanta on wednesday night for the national ACA/PCA (american culture association/popular culture association) conference. we got to atlanta at like 5 in the morning and got up at 10 to go to a panel where dr. banfield, the professor i taught with at st. thomas, was presenting. it was an awesome panel! we had lunch with dr. banfield and his wife (also dr. banfield). we went to other amazing panels throughout the next two days and i presented on friday night on "female autonomy in hip hop or a call for a new symbolic". my presentation went soooo well. :) people asked questions at the end and i was able to articulate myself well and then people came up after and told me how much they enjoyed my paper and wanted to discuss it with me.
friday night we went dancing in atlanta - which was fun. it was great to blow off a little steam. saturday we blew off the conference and went site seeing in atlanta. we went to the church that martin luther king, jr. preached at, which was so powerful. while i sat in this church, listening to recorded versions of his sermon, my eyes got tearful and i got goosebumps on my arms.
we then went to this super cool part of atlanta called "little 5 points". i highly recommend if you are in atlanta to go here. cool people, sweet boutiques, piercing and tattoo parlors and great eats. it was by far my favorite place in atlanta.
after eating we went to midtown and went dancing again. got home at like 3, got up at 8 to have brunch with sandra (stacey's friend that we stayed with and hung out with all weekend), and then headed out by 10:30 a.m.
so now i am back "home" and have a bunch of stuff to do. i have to write a short 5 page paper today, attend a move in orientation at noon, attend another conference tomorrow and at some point this week begin to pack, since i move on sunday to my new apartment. it will be a crazy week, but at least i had a wonderful break. i danced my ass off, shopped a little, met amazing new people, and presented a conference paper, which helped me to make new connections within the academic sphere (good for the carreer).
now its time to get to work...
