It's all over and I am now ABD!
My committee said I did "very well" and that they look forward to having follow-up conversations with me next week--all three members had to run from my exam to either another exam or to teaching. But they were warm and kind and seemed genuinely pleased with my performance.
I felt it went really well, except for my first list in which I got to talk about only ONE playwright (Ben Jonson) and where J. insisted on asking me question about specific poems from George Herbert (which I didn't remember) and then about Milton. Considering the amount of time I spent reviewing that specific list this week, and the fact that she knows my interest is in the theater, I felt kinda gypped. Also? She hinted she would ask me about Marvell's country-house poem "Upon Appleton House," which I dutifully looked over this morning, and then she never asked about it AT ALL. Lame.
Things went much better after that, and by the second half my nerves had disappeared completely. My chair was awesome, as was the committee member I had been most worried about (L.). I think they got around to asking me questions on about a quarter of what I had read. :P
Thing that might have been panic inducing but wasn't? Finding that the Campus Center had accidentally booked my exam from 10pm-12pm, instead of 10am-12pm, thus creating a conflict with the Tenure Promotion Committee that meets every Wednesday in that room from 9am-11am. The Tenure committee was pretty cranky at us for interrupting them, but the Campus Center found us another room right away and all was well.
Also? They complimented me on my outfit.
Right now I am going to go east, then do something mindless for awhile. We may go out and do something fun with part of the afternoon. We ARE going out to a nice dinner tonight. And tomorrow? Tomorrow I get to go back to having a life.
