I wrote this mostly so I would stop feeling like the world was suddenly ending. I also felt the need to thank everyone. So if you're up to it feel free to read the
Over the past four years I have grown. I have learned what love really is. I've learned that gaming is fantastic. I've learned that learning can be hard. I've learned that professors are always great inspirations, whether or not they inspire good things is a completely different matter. I've learned that sometimes you can't do everything yourself. I've learned to lean on God and my friends, I've also learned to be leaned on. I've learned that some people just don't get along. I've learned that we all still have alot of growing up to do.
The past four years have held some of the most miserable moments of my life and most of the fantastic moments of my life. All of the things that I have learned and all of the moments that define my life are due to my friends.
Many of you I only really got to know this year. For that I am sorry. I wish that I could have gotten to know you all earlier. This mostly refers to the people at Wesley that I met this year. Each year defined a new stage in my life and each set of new friends exemplified that stage.
My freshman year it was all the "RAs", of course I instantly make friends with the people who are supposed to have authority over me...that's how it always was. Tom, Brian, Jesse, Casey, Tabitha, Jessica and Lillie. All great people. People who made me feel welcome at TU even when most of my high school friends abandoned me because I went to a different school. Then there were the girls that lived on my hall, Sarah, Katie and Shannon. I remember being bowled over at how amazingly kind Sarah was, at how busy and productive Katie was and just how understanding and insightful Shannon was. I met Justin, Nick, Ryan, Adam, Thomas, Thursday, Amanda,Davd, Sara...well just about everyone that I am friends with now.
Sophomore year was interesting and full of bitterness. I let some other people's bitterness become my own. I had a secret relationship, I had a public hatred towards Housing. I started to resent atheletes and greeks. But despite all that I began to make even more friends. I hung out in the suite, saw Firefly for the first time. I made jokes about The Claw saw Brian and Matt play Snakeeater. I started to feel more at home. These were my friends and my family. Afterthought was in full swing, I became the Platonic Groupie while Sarah was The Girlfriend. There was scads of gossip about housing and the new RDs and drama galore.
Junior year was the first year of cybercorps. I found myself spending lots of time with Sam, Amanda, Derek, Ken, Matt Jones and Mark, not to mention various other people. This too was a year of drama. I did many dumb things and went through much personal turmoil..all the while trying to make sure that I was good enough to get a job when I graduated. School became even harder and all I could think about was being done. WoW sucked up a good portion of my time for awhile. That year saw the birth of a Fish obsession and the beginning of Mage. By spring I was so swirled up from all the drama that the onlything keeping me sane were all my friends. At the end of the year I found David. Then I went to Maryland...yuck. It was all my friends that kept me sane while I was there.
This year has been the hardest year of my life. School felt the need to make me work incredibly hard just to get by. But it was all my friends that kept me going. They showed me how to be closer to God, how to relieve stress and how to feel loved and appreciated. I worked so hard right up till the end that I never got to tell most of you Thank You. Thank you for keeping me sane. Thank you for making me a better person. Thank you for always being there. Thank you for providing some levity to my otherwise rather serious worrying mind. Thank you for always believing that I'll make it. Thank you for everything.
Last night Derek said that friends are everything. Education is all well and good. A job is nice but when it all comes down to the line it is friends that make your life worthwhile. And he was right. So now that we are all moving away I wanted to say that we shouldn't let distance keep us apart. In this age of instant communication there is no excuse to let your friends drift away. Yes we will all be busy, that is our nature. But there is no reason we shouldn't keep in touch. It won't be the same... this chapter of our lives is coming to a close. We are moving on with our lives and we will continue to grow. But I realize that I want my friends to always be my friends. Even if we can no longer make late night runs to IHOP or head to the wesley for random pong games. I love all of you and wish you all the best. I simply urge everyone to keep in touch, email, IM, phone or even just stop by if you are in the area. College is the time when you make lifelong friends. Lets make sure that the lifelong part actually happens.
