speaking of movies, tonight the mother and i watched Human Trafficking, starring Donald Sutherland and Mira Sorvino. it's one of those cautionary tales that include far too little detail, so if you ask me, it's pretty safe for the whole family to watch. at the same time, the stories of the women and children who got trapped in white slavery are as moving and disturbing as they get.

donald sutherland, as usual, was sublime. i use my lone, lame donald icon, for the old man got his sexy on again :D as for the other main character, mira sorvino, i dunno... i don't think i was ever a big mira sorvino fan, and if she did anything for me in this movie, it was mildly irritate me with her acting. granted, it wasn't horrible, but i... guess she didn't strike me as a believable officer of the law? (in retrospect, the overall acting in the movie was kinda subpar. that wasn't really what mattered, though.)

it surprised me that a lot of the plot appears to take place in manila. i admit, i downloaded this thing because i heard it gave some insight on the global flesh trade, and i had a story idea (now abandoned) about foreign traffickers in the philippines. and, okay... so i've always known that trafficking here is as rampant as they come, but hearing someone else ask about places to "have a good time" in the philippines, and hearing someone else answer "in the philippines? pretty much everywhere" still stung. a lot.

maybe i've always just thought about the rp as *a* trafficking destination... i just never thought about it as *the* trafficking destination. indonesia, cambodia and thailand are other popular southeast asian target locations of sex tourists looking to get it cheap. okay, maybe the philippines was chosen at random from the list, maybe our so good english made for a workable setting, but still... this movie makes me feel like i never really cared *enough* before.

i may have done my share of defending this country's authorities, but i've got nothing here. for a fairly liberal country that recognizes the rights of women to work and attain proper education, children and women still get the short end of the stick when poverty is in question. and if local lawmakers really do care as much as they profess to about innocent women and children suffering, they would work harder to break the connections that domestic and international traffickers have made with local authority figures. they would make it harder for families to even consider selling their children off for extra money for whatever reason.

"most of the people over here," an american security official said of the philippines, "are gracious, honest and decent. but because of economic hardship and poverty, there are some who take advantage. they become creditors. they look for easy targets."

btw, my mother pointed out that the guys they got to play filipino policemen were all handsome. "this film isn't realistic," she remarked, "not a single ugly, potbellied cop anywhere." XD she cried at all the scenes with nadia and her father, though.

here's a quiz result from obakesan:

You scored as Kurogane. You are like Kurogane from Tsubasa. You are everything anyone could want to those who love you, and everything to fear from those who do not. Your are the type of person who comes across as being aloof and distant and your trust is not something easily earned, but once it is, you are a friend for life. And try as you might to fool them, those closest to you know you’re just one big cuddly teddy bear. <3
