I have a before and after for you; before living in England I thought American was, eh, okay. It was nice and comfortable but uninteresting where I lived and a little monotonous and boring. I also saw America as capitalistic and greedy; a faceless hub of cities with crime and poverty. America was an okay place to live but I wanted to get out, get out of my town, the county, the state, and the nation. I had traveled internationally before but for less than three weeks at a time. Each trip made me yearn for a place completely different from the America I was living in. I wanted to live in a place that knew history for hundreds of centuries before America was even touched. I wanted to experience life in the cultural lane in Europe. So I hopped over the ocean and spent four some months in northwest England. Now here comes the after...or, since I'm writing this just barely into month three, not quite an 'after'. I've come to realize that America rocks, I mean really. I normally don't go around displaying my love for my country but I just want to shout it from the hills. When I think of America I think of sunshine, smiling faces, road trips, good music, laughter, friends and endless stretches of roads and highways. Think about it...In the 20th century America has had more exciting and radical changes than any other country in the world! Reminisce with me...the 50s were completely different from the 60s...the 80s completely different from the 90s and so on and so forth. In each decade we've managed to do a 360 and create a fun and unique era. With each decade came changes in culture, music, fashion, food, politics, film, and the multitudes of other elements I can't think of right now. And that is just in the 19th CENTURY!! Here is a bit of dialog from a great pro-American movie Talladega Nights:
Jean: I think what you're hearing is my accent; I am French.
Ricky: Really?
Jean: Oui.
Ricky: 'We?' No, 'we' are not French. We are American cause you're in America, the greatest country on the planet.
So I'll hold up my American flag at the local parades when I get home, I'll proudly sing the National Anthem at sporting events, and perhaps I'll even wear some red, white and blue for Independence Day. No other country is so diverse and wonderful as America. America rocks!! Hell YEAH!!!
