Wicked Thoughts

Mar 21, 2010 20:44

I saw Wicked for the fourth time this past week (although it feels more like the third time since I don't remember much from the first time I saw it).  It was spectacular, as it always is. I already want to see it again, but I know that I must resist until there is a tempting enough cast change. My bank account will surely appreciate that.  Below is a list of the casts I've seen along with some thoughts.

1st time: National Tour in Boston - 2007 - Don't remember cast/can't find program.
2nd time: Broadway - 2009 - Nicole Parker and Alli Mauzey
3rd time: Broadway - 2009 - Dee Roscioli and Erin Mackey (and Michelle Federer!!!)
4th time: Broadway - 2010 - Dee Roscioli and Katie Rose Clarke

- I'm in love with Nicole Parker.
- Katie Rose Clarke is the best 2nd Act Glinda I've seen. She seemed a little too subdued during the 1st act, and I suspect she may not have been feeling well. However, in the 2nd Act, she brought out all of Glinda's complexity and growth.
- Dee Roscioli was much much much more impressive this last time I saw her. Her singing was extremely strong, and her riffs were nice. I'm not so much a fan of her acting in certain parts because she seems a little too intense, but that's a matter of opinion/interpretation.
- Nicole and Alli had the best chemistry out of the three pairs I remember. You could tell they were having so much fun with each other whereas with Dee and Katie, it's much more (perhaps a bit too) subtle on Dee's side which is starkly offset by how Katie's Glinda is with Elphaba.
- I wish I could have seen some of the greats: OBC (obviously), Julia, Eden, Kendra, Teal

It seems as though many studios are in the process of producing several Oz-related movies, which I think will delay the coming of the Wicked movie. On the bright side, Universal can learn from the failings of those movies and make the Wicked one even better. On the not-so bright side, this means there is a 99.9% chance that Universal won't cast the OBC in the movie. (Due to my delusional tendencies, I'm still holding onto that tiny 0.1%. Mainly because I want to see a Kristin/Idina reunion, although a special anniversary performance would be fine too. Oh, and maybe a proshot DVD as well.) Hopefully, we can trust that the producers will cast people who can actually sing and act the roles, as opposed to people who don't really fit the bill but have a huge fan following. *coughLeaMichelecough* How about someone like Nicole Parker, who is somewhat well-known outside of the theatre community but can also play the part? :)

Anywho, I leave you all with a clip that inspired this entry. Do not watch while eating/drinking. :)
