Last monday, Rodri and I went to the cinema. We watched El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) first. Such a wonderful, intense, MARVELOUS movie!!!!
And then, seeing that we still had the rest of our afternoon free, we decided to watch another movie. We choose The Reaping ("Prueba de Fe" acá en Chile).
And I HAVE to say this:

THAT CITY AT THE BEGINNING IS NOT CONCEPCIÓN, CHILE.

I should know. I live and work in Concepción, Chile. When the image of that city appeared on the screen with the words "Concepción, Chile", the people in the cinema mostly laughed. But then, as the images showed more of "Concepción" the laughs mostly turned into indignant huffs.
OK, it's true that near Conce there's a big sector full of industries. But there's no ominous cloud of smog hanging over there!
We have pavemented streets over here, people, and OMG! traffic lights too! People don't dress with colorful shirts and those raffia or straw hats. We don't have a tropical weather (I wish!), so people actually use shoes and not straw sandals and please, believe me, we don't speak spanish with a CENTROAMERICAN ACCENT!! -_-;;
Oh, and those policemen wearing uniforms that I haven't seen in my life?
And finally, well, I know we aren't exactly a first world country but WE ARE NOT an "ignorant third world population so deprived of everything to cover their basic needs that are willing to believe in anything that takes them out of their miserable lives", or something like that.
And those were the words of Hilary Swank's character giving an academic lecture in a university. *scoffs*
Probably the people in charge of the research for the movie thought that, since Concepción is such a poor, miserable city, we would never actually see the movie because, surely, there must be no cinemas here, right?
Well, of course that for somebody who doesn't know Concepción, this detail has no importance. But for us (at least for Rodri and me) ruined the entire scenario of the movie, supposedly based on the "scientific accuracy" of the main character.
So this left us wondering... how many other places we don't know about are so wrongly depicted in movies??

concepción, rant
