Since we share Revenge and The Hour, clearly this means that we have superb taste. I just saw a promo for a show called Deception which looks very Revenge-y so I think I'll be giving that a try. I believe that the premier is tonight so I will let you know. Although, if you decide to watch it then you can let me know!
I think that I had seen the first couple of episodes on a plane (of all places) and been surprisingly impressed, but then I sort of forgot about it. So when I saw several people raving about it following the S2 final I thought that I should probably give it a proper go, and man am I glad that I did.
From perusing the internet it looks as though the BBC had, in fact, renewed The Hour shortly after the first season ended. This time around that hasn't happened. There are a couple of interviews from the show running discussing the fact that she would love a S3 but has heard nothing as yet. I think that it would be slightly tough to pull of Freddie/Bel as a real thing due to the fact that part of their appeal is the UST of it all. But having said that I could certainly see Bel being uber-protective and Freddy hating it and that being the drama. But surely Freddie would live. He's such and integral part of the show.
Totally agree with you regarding the development of their relationship. I sort of felt that Freddy was already there with the longing looks etc in S1, but then Bel totally stepped it up for S2. And my fangirly heart was glad when they finally kissed. I guess that it would be okay if there wasn't a S3 cause I can fanwank it in my head that Freddy is okay and they live happily ever after. Better than having that refuted by canon!
I am so impressed by the supporting cast - they're absolutely amazing. The Lix/Randall stuff was so quiet and yet so full of emotion. And Marnie is just wonderful.
Totally know what you mean about Cloud Atlas, although there are a few people on my flist that have seen it and are rather positive about it. I remember not being a massive fan of the book. But I think that's because I found it somewhat incomprehensible. I appear to have blanked much of it from my brain!
For sure, we have exquisite taste in all things TV. I have heard talk of Deception and its similarities to Revenge, and ngl I'm in two minds about it. So many shows, so little time. Did you end up seeing it? What did you think?
So wonderful to see people from all over the world pitching in. :') I got an error trying to sign it, but I'll try again tomorrow.
HMM, they could still introduce some drama into Bel/Freddie's relationship b/c for all their complicity, they disagree a lot as well, and sparks fly when they do. As long as there is another case to investigate at the core of the season, it could work! Also, Freddie is still married... isn't he?
I mean, I totally hear you about that open ending - boy, does my imagination run wild when it comes to the aftermath of Freddie's beating! - but another part of me really, really doesn't want to let go of the show and Ben & Romola's gorgeous faces.
lol, we have looked at the Cloud Atlas book in my translation class (as a translation challenge! because it makes so little sense!) and I figured it was a good indicator of what the movie would be like, but IDC because I need my Whishaw fix, lol.
ALSO, I've decided I really need to re-watch S1 and angst at Bel's obliviousness when it comes to Freddie's stares. It's been so long since I've seen it! I may even have thoughts about how it ties into S2. ;)
I haven't seen Deception yet, but I do have it downloaded and ready to go, so I think that I shall probably do that today at some point. I will let you know how it goes!
I already signed that petition a few weeks ago! I'm not sure how much difference it makes, but then I think that the BBC probably would be inclined to do another series for a show that people want to have back on air, cause if people ask them why they bothered, they can point to the taxpaying public and say that they're a public station doing what they were told! Fingers well and truly crossed!
They could indeed introduce relationship drama, but that tends to be my least favourite kind. I'm all for unrequited pining, but I have yet to see relationship drama be done in a way that is sympathetic to both parties. Although, yes, they could totally make it about the fact that Freddie is still married. And Bel is all about her inappropriate relationships with married men!
Oh good, I am glad that my memories of Cloud Atlas have been borne out by your translation class. I remember that I finished it and couldn't quite work out what all the fuss had been about because I only understood about half of what had happened! Perhaps it is something that will translate better into movie form? But yes, Ben.
You SHOULD rewatch! It's only 6 episodes and there are some superb faces.
Your thoughts on why the petition is important give me hope. I've no idea why it wouldn't allow me to sign it, but I think the fact that I didn't provide my detailed address might have something to do with it. Not a big fan of that part... what to do, what to do.
The Hour's Golden Globe nomination also gives me hope, although it would have been better for us if it won, ofc.
Yes, I was thinking that maybe Freddie's wife is nowhere to be found! And - oh - how twisted would it be if Freddie ever brought up the fact that he had to get MARRIED to get Bel to finally agree to be with him & called her on it as being the only reason, and her flipping out about it & not wanting to justify herself, and it escalating? I just... I'm not sure she'll ever tell him about that letter b/c she's very private about her feelings and there could be tension/doubts, etc.
lol, I'm sure I'll come to you & complain when I'll watch it. I should get on with it... S1 OF THE HOUR TOO. so many things to watch, so little time, but at least I finally HAVE some. YAY.
Well, like I say, I don't know if it'll make a difference but I'm prepared to do anything I can at this stage!
It would be amazing if Freddie found the letter. I'm not sure if he'd be cool with it or furious that she let him be off in the world not knowing and marrying someone else. He is big on all the truth all the time after all. Could be interesting.
S1 of the Hour was also really good, but had quite a different feel to S2 which was definitely darker overall. It's still fabulous though!
Did you get the impression that Freddie actually told her he loved her first in his letters? He kept reciting what he wrote & stopped mid-sentence after "And I said..." . Probably made it all the more devastating to him that he confessed his feelings and never heard back from her.
I'm not really sure tbh, I hadn't thought about it. I think that the implication has always been that Freddie told her that he loved her at some point. There's no way that all those looks could have been totally without some sort of background confession! ITA agree about the devestation though. HE MARRIED ANOTHER GIRL TO TRY AND GET OVER HER.
YES. Did he love the other girl? I think he was fond of her, but not the way he was fond of Bel, BEL WAS STILL HIS /LIFE/ AND THE ONLY PERSON HE COULD THINK ABOUT.
I WATCHED THE ENTIRETY OF S1 YESTERNIGHT (I was going to watch only E1 lol oops) AND EVERYTHING BETWEEN FREDDIE & BEL IS SO LACED WITH EXTRA ~MEANING NOW, I CANNOT.
I really, really need to talk about it so that my head doesn't explode, I am SO re-watching it again and possibly S2 too and making a post in the nearest future.
But yeah S1 totally pointed at some history there. HE RECITED POETRY TO HER & SHE ACTED ALL TOUCHY-FEELY WITH HIM & damn, how could I ever have /doubts/ she felt the same way, f l a w l e s s OTP.
P.S. I really need some TheHour userpics if I'm going to fangirl like this.
BEL WAS STILL HIS /LIFE/ AND THE ONLY PERSON HE COULD THINK ABOUT. Yes. This. I am in 100% agreement about the fact that Freddie always had Bel in his head as the person he would end up with. But then Bel didn't reply to his letters and I think he just got on with his life. He found a girl that he really liked and thought he wanted to be with forever, but he barely knew her, and as soon as he was back in Bel's atmosphere that was it.
I have not watched S1 since the end of S2, but I remember very well all the stuff about poetry and baths and lying on the same bed etc etc.
I've visited the petition site & there's only a little over 500 signatures left! However, I think I've discovered the reason the BBC is on the fence about renewing the series: Romola's fansite is reporting that she has recently announced her pregnancy:
I'm happy for her (imagine how GORGEOUS that kid will be!), but of course, it puts a delay on any nearest commitments, especially a TV show one. In any case, I hope they won't cancel the series but just put off until she's ready to work again.
In other news, I sort of want to watch everything with Ben & Romola rn?? IDK I've done that for maybe 2 or 3 actors in my lifetime, but they are just SO and I miss them so much. Mum & I have seen the first two episodes of Emma today and LOVED IT, she is so delightful in it, I can't handle it.
Fingers crossed that this is indeed the reason cause that would give me way more hope! If you're on a Romola kick then I would totally recommend 'I Capture the Castle' it's one of my favourite movies and it has bonus Rose Byrne!

Yeah, apparently there's a petition going on, so the BBC must be doubtful about continuing the show. Apparently, it needs about a thousand more signatures: http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/the-bbc-please-commission-a-third-series-of-the-hour
