My personal views on teen alcohol/drug use are very simple. I think there are two reasons that teens that consistently use alcohol/drugs do so. One that is especially prevalent in our community is boredom. Some high school students drink or smoke because they feel there is simply nothing else to do. Another reason I believe that teens consistently use alcohol/drugs is because of underlying reasons. Teens, much like adults who are users, try to fill voids in their lives with drugs and alcohol. Alcohol and drugs can also temporarily distract teens from problems that they feel are out of their control. In a time when everyone around you has some suggestions for your life, some expectations and some ridicule, some teens may feel that alcohol/drugs are the only thing in their lives that is not disappointed with them and does not expect anything. All this shows is that teens need to learn how to self-fulfill. Teens need more respect from people of other ages in their lives, and an available way to work through their problems instead of delaying and temporarily distracting themselves from them. Continuance of education on the dangers of drugs and alcohol is needed, but alternatives are in high demand. Personally, I would like to help teens locate such alternatives, as I know how hard they can be to find. In my experience, I have chosen drugs as a temporary distraction from problems. (I do drink rarely, though I have never been drunk.) This has never actually solved anything I was trying to run away from however and I would like to pass that information on personally to other teens.
