There was something about Lilah - when she smiled that vain, feline smile - that made Wesley’s blood boil and brought out the worst in him. It was that same something that attracted him powerfully, passionately to her.
She was a better escape than sleep, work, or whiskey, so nothing he did surprised him. His attachment to her, his addiction to her, was not surprising.
But what was surprising - as she pressed a hand to her bleeding stomach and looked at him with scared, pleading eyes that told him what she could not - was her addiction to him.
