A wonderful chapter. I really like the idea that the name was given in friendship and respect.

Of course, the Rangers went by pseudonyms as much for their own protection as any other reason, and we know that some of those names were given by the derisive folk of Bree. But I think every now and then, they would give one another names out of friendship as well!

So do I. That was what fascinated me about JRRT's version of Trotter-- the idea of a "hobbit ranger"! And he has indeed found a welcome among them.

I love how the Rangers have taken him under their wing, even giving him a name :D It must feel like a home away from home, among these kind Men.

It's probably what he needed. He's not safe alone in the Wide World-- but he did not only need rescuers, but someone to assuage his loneliness as well. Hobbits are social creatures at heart, so he's made a surrogate family of the Rangers.

Hobbits *are* quite useful and resourceful-- not quite the helpless little things that some Men might think of them.

I could just see him trying to keep up with these long-legged Men: two or three steps to every one of theirs--he'd have to trot to keep up, and I'm sure they noticed.
