Now, I love tennis, but I love my job even more, so I haven't been getting up at 2:30am to watch the evening matches of the Australian Open. Imagine my surprise, though not total shock, when I wake up this morning to learn that Roger Federer has gone out in straight sets to Novak Djokovic, 7-5, 6-2, 7-6(7-5).

By beating James Blake earlier this year, Feds secured the number one ranking for a fourth consecutive YEAR!!!! A stat that is measured in weeks - 208 in this case - can also be measured in YEARS for him. Part of me is glad because while he's amazing to watch, even on television, it's nice when things are up for grabs too. The other part of me is a little sad. Federer is only three titles away from tying Pete Sampras's record 14 Grand Slam Titles and he wants that. Bad. And unless he can win the French, which he never has, it won't happen this year. Not that I want Pete's record broken, but Federer is going to do it. He's very aware of tennis history and his place in it. It would be kinda nice though and have him relax and enjoy it and have fun with it. He does have a tendency to be a little machine like on the court, especially when a Grand Slam title is on the line.

I wish Djokovic and Tsongas, the men's finalists, well. I am planning on getting up early for that one.
