Being karmic I thought it was comical

flashbacks between the fourth of July
sprouting fireworks like second story bulldozers
taking apart buildings brick by brick
and the similarities of the scene now
stretched on your bed. I should have known it
when I bent in to give you a kiss, you stayed still waiting
like snakes do while they watch the mouse
scamper about in-between pebbles before they strike.
This is Retribution - for breaking hearts like glass slippers
because I could never find the one that fit.
