Well, I haven't studied abroad, and my experience in the military wasn't always fantastic, but I met a lot of fantastic people and went a lot of places that I kind of miss the environment of now that I'm out.
The thing that a lot of us would do/say is that you just take them all with you when you go. Make them/it part of you; you're the sum total of your experiences, and even if they've been with you a short time, it still can affect your life in a profound way. It doesn't mean that you want to go back to being who you were before.
One of my bridesmaids was someone I met in tech school at Sheppard, who I felt I knew forever, and looking back, we met in May 2003 and she left in August. That's a super short time, but we're *so* close, and she's so important to me... Life is just too short to worry about what 'should' be and just go with what makes you happy.
It sounds like you had a fabulous time; having been to Scotland and loving having been to Scotland sounds like it's part of who you are. I think that's just fine, and if someone thinks that's weird, well... they've probably never left their local area in their life.
