John hadn't realized how quiet the Winchester household had become until he sniffled at breakfast and it startled a cry from Sammy and Dean from his cereal.

However, when the Winchesters went grocery shopping they were so quiet they were like a group of corporeal ghosts. In the world outside their home Sammy's crying sounded normal if persistent, Dean was just a shy boy if persistently so, and John sounded like a normal tired parent if persistently so. John looked over at the sun shining in the huge grocery store windows. It lit the secret fire in the cashier's hair and the glare made some people seem almost as if they weren't there.

"I know," John said, handing a grocery bag to Dean, gripping Sammy tightly in one arm, and embracing Dean's hand with his.

supernatural, cold, john
