Supernatural drabble: Yearn

Disclaimer: Kripke rules (the world of Supernatural).

Author's Note: prompt from spn_30snapshots theme 1, Elemental, and also from an email with vie_dangerouse about the necessity of a fic where in Dean sneezes and hits his head on the Impala.

***

Dean knows his dad needs him. He knows his brother's leaving has driven a thorn into his dad. He knows how stubborn his dad can be; how his dad likes to be the one in control all the time. He doesn't want his dad to become like the lion in Aesop's tale without a mouse around to restore him.

Dean loads up on medicine: bitter spoonfuls of cough syrup; swallows of Tylenol, vitamin C, cold capsules, and decongestants; a mug of TheraFlu or NeoCitran. He even takes a long shower, so long in fact that his dad asks if Dean is becoming a girl.

Dean misses one thing: a nap, which he has been longing for since his dad started pushing for more dangerous cases. This is not something Dean minds. Dean likes the tougher cases; they are often more rewarding, making a bigger difference, saving more lives.

Dean hates that his body has betrayed his exhaustion. So he pretends he is fine. It is something his dad accepts because he is too absorbed in the details of the case and the thrill of the coming, case closing chase.

"Let's go, Dean," his dad says from the door where he's already got his boots on and car keys in hand.

("I'm going, Dean," his brother says from the door, shoes laced, and bag in hand.)

His dad checks the supplies in his truck. Dean waits by the Impala that sits cast in shadow beside the truck. The shadows that compose the environment at this time move oddly, the world distant through his congestion and his attempts to remedy it.

The lights of his dad's truck flare as Dean moves to lever himself into the Impala. The lights are especially bright in the dark. Dean's eyes water, his nose runs, and his body is jarred by a sneeze.

The angle of his body forces Dean to acknowledge the shiny metal of the Impala's roof (like when Sam left and Dean wanted to leave too, but knew that hunting was better done with a partner). The world goes fuzzy like he's looking at it through a rain splattered window or watery eyes.

Then he lets go.
