Supernatural drabble: Hunger

Disclaimer: Kripke's world, not mine.

Set: season 6.

Author's Note: I'm sorry I don't care that I'm spelling Castiel's nickname C-A-S instead of C-A-S-S like the writers do. Cass just seems too much like the short form of CASSandra.

Author's Note 2: one of the prompts on spn_30snapshots theme: Elemental.

“Cas?!”

Castiel looks up from the soft mound of his burger. He thinks about leaving. Burgers now present themselves to Castiel in Heaven.

“Castiel, what the Hell are you doing here?”

“Someone told me to go here,” Castiel sniffs.

Dean exchanges a narrow eyed look with Sam, his mouth pressed into a line.

“Dean meant what are you doing in a diner when you've been so busy with the war in Heaven lately?” Sam explains.

Castiel tries to explain, “there was this woman...”

“Ooh, a girrrl,” Dean interjects in falsetto.

“A woman,” Castiel says swallowing around his scratchy throat, “who told me I was supposed to feed a cold and starve a fever.”

“She probably meant chicken noodle soup,” Sam says, “or tea.”

“Even I don't go for a burger when I'm sick,” Dean agrees. “Of course, I don't go for chicken noodle soup either, but people say it's the thing for Sick People to eat.”

Castiel sets his burger aside. “Well, I'm hot now, so I don't think I'll be eating my burger this moment.” His breath hitches like it has been doing all day, and he buries his sweaty face into the fabric of his trenchcoat to muffle a short burst of air. His breath catches in his throat afterward and his chest rattles.

Sam and Dean take their menus to Castiel's booth. Dean thumping Castiel on the back on his way. The brothers are smaller than Castiel remembers. Smaller than the memories of Dean and Sam that visit Castiel in Heaven.

“I guess it's nice to see you anyway,” Dean says as the leather covered cushion shapes to his bum with a sigh.

“We just wish you would come when we call,” Sam adds.

“We know you're not our dog,” Dean says, “but we thought we were friends.”

“I have never had a friend,” Castiel says carefully and sniffs.

“Well, a friend makes sure another friend is okay,” Dean says. He catches the eye of a passing waitress. "We'll have a peppermint tea and a bowl of tomato soup with a side of rice," he tells her.
