Supernatural drabble: Fun House

Dean can't believe that Vic conned him into meeting her parents. Telling him that she needed a different coat from her house and then coaxing him inside with promises of seeing her room (Dean glimpses her bed in his mind's eye). And besides he shouldn't wait outside in the cold when he's got one. It is against Dean's better judgement that he agrees to enter the cool rectangle speckled like a chocolate chip cookie with smaller rectangles of light.

She thumps up the steps with the certainty of someone who has lived in the same place all of their life. When she opens the door heat and a scent of cinnamon that reminds Dean of apple pie rushes out to embrace them. Dean knows immediately that her parents are home and the glowing windows were no decoy to possible burglars (like the Winchesters were forced to be sometimes).

"Hi Vicky!" Her mother's thick head of curly hair (like her daughter's but shorter) appears silhouetted in the light of the kitchen. She turns on a hallway light, casting her world and her daughter and Dean's world into equal light.

"Rob, Vicky has brought someone home!" Vic's mother calls to the end of the hallway where noises of glass shattering, hollering, and loud bangs that sound familiar to Dean's ears as gunfire are emanating. A man comes into the hallway. He is tall like his daughter. Holding a newspaper in one hand he grips Dean's hand loosely with the other.

Vic's mother says, "it's nice to meet the person who has been occupying so much of our daughter's time."

Vic's father adds, "and our phone line."

Dean's face wrinkles into a small smile, his lips peeling back to reveal their hard, white secrets. However, his expression stutters into an explosive sneeze, hurriedly hidden behind his hands. Vic's mom hands her daughter a tissue box she retrieves from the nearby bathroom. Dean blames the congestion for the pressure in his face that makes his eyes shine at the thought that Vic's family confine their messes to the bathroom.

Dean cleans himself up as well as his cold and company will allow and then tries to hurry Vic's retrieval of her coat. Her mom tells them to come down afterward and have some leftover dinner if they haven't already. At which Dean's stomach growls, hungry for something beyond coffee and burgers.

Vic and Dean end up staying at Vic's house a lot longer (exploring the flavours of roast beef, mashed potatos, and broccoli with Vic's mom, the make believe world of action and who-dunnit with Vic's dad, and the colours of Vic's bedspread with Vic's body) than he would have expected, but even with the discomfort of possessing a heavy headcold Dean felt comfortable. Like he is wearing a soft, warm hoodie instead of his regular tough, smooth leather jacket. When he leaves Vic's chocolate chip cookie house his nose is running like a little kid's, but he's sated like he's a little kid who's spent the day at a fun house.
