Sammy is upset when Dean tells him that he can't write his full name, so Dean tells Sammy that he can write the "&." This way both boys get to mark four letters into the upholstery of the Impala.
Little did Dean know how important his relegating the "&" to Sam would be. Sam defined "&." Dean struggled to keep an "&" between his father & Sam, father & son, and when that failed Dean struggled to keep the "&" between him & Sam. But Sam was king of the "&" and he dictated its use.
Sammy had had trouble shaping the "&" in the Impala. Dean thinks that maybe not much has changed.
