Supernatural drabble: Silence

Dean didn't immediately fall silent after the fire that killed his mother. He was quieter. Shocked perhaps. But Dean did say something: where is Mommy, Daddy?
Whenever Dean asked, whether it was over the cries of an unhappy Sammy or in the quiet of the dark, John's face pinched and sometimes he reached for a glass, shot, or bottle of alcohol. He never answered Dean. Only told him to look after his brother.
So Dean stopped asking. And thus stopped talking.
For a while. Until it became abundantly clear that Mommy was not going to be gracing her young Winchester family with her presence any time soon. Then Dean opened his mouth and worked his hibernating vocal chords to say to Daddy over the hunched shoulders of a dinnertime beer: Mommy's watching over me and you and Sammy, right?
