McCain Reiterates Opposition to Gay Rights

Email to a friendPost a CommentPrinter-friendlyAt a forum at Concord High School in New Hampshire, Republican presidential hopeful John McCain was asked what he would do for "LGBT" rights and he confessed he didn't know what they were. Once he understood what the letters stood for, he said that while he opposed discrimination, he supported the discriminatory exclusion of out gays in the military and opposed same-sex marriage.

William Sleaster, the sophomore who asked the question, followed up in a way that put the questioners on the HRC/LOGO forum to shame. "You want to take away someone's rights because you believe it's wrong," he said.
When McCain replied, "I don't put that interpretation on my position, but I understand yours," Sleaster shot back, "I came here looking to see a leader. I don't."
Earlier McCain "joked" to a student who questioned his age and mental competence, "Thanks for your question, you little jerk... you're drafted." McCain supports the war in Iraq, but clearly sees serving there as a punishment.
