I got off to such a great start this year and then just fell off the bandwagon. Whatever. Here's what I've read so far. Asteriks denote a reread.
1. The Furies, by Mike Carey.
I'm always hesitant to read something by someone writing in another author's universe, but this was amazing. Really good storytelling, excellent use of mythology, great lines, a very Sandman feel. My only complaint is that everyone was white. I guess in some cases this could just be the way it happened, but Kali was in this. She was very definitely a person of color in Sandman, and she looks pretty damn white in here.
2. Saving Fish From Drowning, by Amy Tan.
I... wish I could say something more awesome about this book. I really liked the Joy Luck Club because it was about stories, which is something that spoke to me beyond the fact these were Chinese women far older than me from another time period. This had some interesting moments in it, I liked some perspectives in it, but I wouldn't read it again, though I can't articulate why it was weird beyond being slow and kind of a non-event.
3. Sabriel, by Garth Nix.*
OK. So the writing wasn't as good as I remembered it being, but the storytelling was still excellent. I love the story and the world, right down to being a fantasy story set in a world with a WWI-level of tech. Never attempt to read the sequel.
4. The Drawing of the Three, by Stephen King.*
I was 19 the last time I read this. I finished it on the bus back from Atlanta, the day after seeing my favorite band's first US performance on my birthday. My perspective has definitely changed since then. I remember hating Eddie for being "whiny." The dude was going through heroin withdrawal and wasn't even that whiny about it.
I need to get on this. Other books of interest this year:
Beyond Uhura, by Nichelle Nichols.
Wastelands, by Stephen King.*
Insomnia, by Stephen King.
Lisey's Story, by Stephen King.
The Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley.
Hush: Volume Two, by Jeph Loeb?
Catspaw, by Joan D. Vinge.*
