I get to go to TWO concerts this week. Count them, two! So very excited!
I went to see a cellist and clarinetist play at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center last night. I was expecting some classical stuff. I was not expecting some classical stuff plus a bit of rap and a short magic trick. It was a lot of fun. The two guys I came to see brought a friend who sings traditional Jewish folk songs in Yiddish and uses a digital recorder to play back pre-recorded sounds. Near the end of the performance he suddenly jumps up and says, "You know what, I want to do something you don't usually see at these cheap performances." He turns to the cellist, tells him to play a jig and grabs a mini publication paper. While the cellist plays a jig he performs the "look I've ripped it up but now it's whole again" trick and then waits for the cellist to end the jig so he can bow. The cellist decides it would be more fun to just keep playing so the poor guy tries to bow, freezes, waits, tries to bow again, freezes, waits, gets fed up, turns and disappears behind the black curtain that lines the walls of the studio. He stays back there while the cellist plays for another couple of minutes and refuses to re-emerge until the cellist has stopped.
The recorder guy later played and sang us a song he wrote about the street he lives on in Montreal. Yep, he's Canadian. The song ended up being more a rap commentary on the current times and was hysterical. All I remember now are bits and pieces. Something about buying on credit, girls wearing tight sweaters, and a bit that went something like "you can have it all now, why wait? eat everything on the plate then eat the plate". All three of them were really laid back and cool. Made me miss the art department at O.U.
And I'm going to see NIN on saturday with Zain! I GUESS getting to see NIN is worth bearing your company for a few hours ;) Rabbit you've been to one of these recently, what was the crowd like? Do I need to go buy some steel toed boots and knuckle rings :) Seriously though, I have a new-ish shirt I've been dying to wear but it's strapless. Thumbs up or down?
