7/5/06 9:30 am Rome Time, Wednesday
Woke up this morning with a headache but took care of it. I had trouble getting down to breakfast because both sets of doors said they were emergency exits. At breakfast, everyone talked about how different people acted when they were drunk. Jeremy suffered none of the repercussions he expected. As I took the room key from Dylan, one of the parents mentioned that I looked responsible. Now, I sit on the bus passing fields of flowers listening to music on my ipod. I stare out at the rolling Tuscan hills and say good bye to Rome.
Technically, the hills I was staring at were not Tuscan, because I was still in the region of Latium, where Rome resides. That night, I would be in Tuscany.
7/5/06 4:31 pm Assisi time, Wednesday
We arrived earlier today at the quaint town of Assisi. We walked through the town, noticing the amazing view reminiscent of Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Peaceful Country, even though that was from Siena. After eating (I had another mozzarella and tomato sandwich, this time on a baguette), we met Father Pascal at the Basilica of St. Francis. He took us into a separate room and gave a lecture on St. Francis of Assisi and the art from the Basilica. He said some interesting things:
Cimabue, Giotto, Lorenzetti, Martini and others worked on the frescoes there.
“I will show you how to see with your mind what you cannot see with your eyes.”
“I will help you see what is beyond the colors and stones.”
He found 603 different animals and wrote a book on them. His belief is that the columns with arches above them represent trees. An interesting idea. After this we were led by Father Pascal into the church. It was as breathtaking as the Sistine Chapel. Pictures were not allowed, so these images will stay with me. I also learned that St. Francis used the idea that his work should be in the vernacular language. He signed his name with the tau. We got back to the bus, but not before I bought a copy of “Canticle of the Creatures” a sermon by St. Francis. We waited on the bus for a long time, because some people got lost. I got to our hotel, which seems really nice. We had a really good dinner, with pasta and veal. Elias asked me to determine the relationship between water level and frequency in a wine glass. Went to sleep after Jeremy stumbled in.
Early in the day, we went to a food shop that sold Italian products.

I am standing with Father Pascal, who led our tour of the Basilica.
The view fron Assisi was breathtaking.
