Once at the Kitten, Koyasu and Aya-nii excused themselves to a separate room. The soft murmur of their voices could be heard outside. They were there for a long time

...That glasses trick was really more disturbing in person. He'd seen Brad Crawford and Sakurazuka Seishirou both do it in visions, but it didn't induce the same creeping shiver.
"Of course, Fujimiya-san," Kakyou murmured, bowing his head as he moved forward to join the older man.
Koyasu quietly studied Kakyou. The young man made Koyasu curious. It wasn't just ... his relationship with Ran. The earnestness and immediacy that Kakyou proclaimed his devotion to Koyasu's children intrigued and amused Koyasu. He had wanted to laugh at Kakyou's seriousness, but sensed that young man might take it the wrong way. He closed the door, allowing them some privacy.
Koyasu sat on the sofa. There was an empty chair opposite him. Koyasu gave no indication as to whether Kakyou should sit next to him or take the chair opposite the sofa.
Koyasu's voice was low and soft, as always. "Are you alright, son?"
Kakyou settled on the sofa beside Koyasu without thought. This was the Kitten. This was home, and sharing a sofa with someone else here was almost habitual. His hands tucked his kimono about him neatly.
He glanced up curiously at the question, then tilted his head slightly again, letting his hair screen his cat-slit eyes in a subtle gesture. Koyasu wouldn't be accustomed to such things. "I'm fine, sir. Why do you ask?"
"I ask because after what has happened today, I would be easy to understand if you were not fine," Koyasu answered. He was good at studying people without it making appear he was doing so, which is what he did with Kakyou now.
"I..." Kakyou hesitated, trying to find the right words. "...Hokuto is happy for me. She likes the people I have chosen to live for. Even though the situation is difficult, and there are certain issues that I will need to take up with Aya-chan, what I have gained makes it worth it."
"...Absolution," Kakyou said softly, after a long moment. "When Hokuto died, my heart died with her. My life, such as it was, revolved around her for nearly a decade. Here, with Aya and Aya-chan...I finally let her go. I moved on. But I could not let go of the guilt I felt for it."
Passionate. Intense. Dramatic. Qualities Ran had in abundance. With his Ran, those qualities at times made Koyasu feel at a loss. Being more emotionally reserved, having a conversation with his son could make Koyasu feel like he was trying to sail through mined waters. With his son's lover and the prospective of returning to death... he really just wanted to laugh. Kakyou's intensity was cute.
None of that showed in his expression, Koyasu reached out to put his hand on Kakyou's shoulder. "I'm pleased for you, Kakyou-san."
Kakyou flushed slightly, offering Koyasu a shy half-smile. He folded his hands together neatly in his lap, fingers tangled together. He thought, wistfully, that Koyasu seemed like the sort of person Kakyou might have liked to have as a father.
"Thank you, Fujimiya-san. Is there anything else you'd like to speak to me about?" Just inquiring after Kakyou's welfare didn't seem like something they needed to be alone for.
Kakyou was certainly as pretty as any young woman Ran might have chosen, Koyasu thought. He wondered without any real angst if that thought would be offensive to the young man.
"I wanted to talk to you in private to get a sense of the man you are. I believe I've done that." Everyone lied. Any answer that Kakyou might give to direct questions Koyasu asked would be colored by Kakyou's obvious desire to make a good impression.
"Is there anything that you want to ask or tell me?"
"Of course, Fujimiya-san," Kakyou murmured, bowing his head as he moved forward to join the older man.

"I see. Forgive me for being obtuse, but what is it exactly that you have gained?"
