:: Aya PINpoints them to a back alley where there arrival won't attract too much attention. A beaten down Model T lurches by. The building in this part of New Orleans have not changed in more than a hundred years. The doors of the club have been left open for ventilation and the sound of jazz spills out into the night. Aya notices that they are ( Read more... )

X watches the positively ancient model of car rumble past as they step out of the alley. While he notices the attention from passing pedestrians, he doesn't pay it too much heed. Or, at least, he doesn't seem to. X is used to attracting attention when he goes places in his world. He's equally used to seemingly ignoring it. However, unlike back home, this attention wasn't because he was a famous Maverick Hunter ( ... )

"X. I'm sorry. I should have thought what being in the southern United States in the 1920s means.

"Anywhere we go here, at least one of us isn't going to be all that welcome." She isn't suggesting that they leave. She just is making sure he is aware.

X glances from the departing couples to Aya. Now he understood where he recognized the reactions from. He'd dealt with similar when he was very young - back before most people considered him to be more than a glorified automaton. "Ah. It's okay. I don't mind. But are you okay with it?" X asked in concern.

"Then we won't go yet. Come on. Let's go inside." X put his hand lightly on her shoulder, ignoring the looks of passers-by as they headed into the club.

Aya is drawn toward the club by the mournful, whiskey-roughed voice of the blues singer. The bar lounge is smoky and dimly lit but clean. Aya goes to a back table. When a waitress gives Aya a questioning look, Aya smiles and politely orders drinks for herself and X. The waitress smiles professionally and bustles off.

Aya is distracted from the performance on stage by looking at the crowd. She has been to other place that were still practicing segregation, but it was still jarring to see. She looks over at X, trying to guess his reaction.

When X and Aya had entered, they'd gotten a few looks from people at tables near the entrance. But most people were either paying attention to the musicians or to their table companions. X follows Aya to the back table, glancing around and taking in the atmosphere of the bar lounge ( ... )

“They're one of the best. They'll be world famous within at ten years. Or at least he will.” She nods her head toward the chubby blues singer on the stage croaking out St. Louis Blues.

The waitress returns with the drinks. Aya thanks her. When the waitress leaves, Aya turns to X with a smile. “I propose a toast to your anniversary. May there be many more happy years to come.”

"Really?" X grins. "You certainly have good taste in picking bands."

X smiles in return and picks up his glass. He briefly wonders what Aya ordered for them as he raises his glass to hers. "To many more happy years."
