The Great Schism lasted from 1378 to 1415. The actual meaning of the word schism is a separation or division into factions. That is exactly what the great schism was. It was a division of the Roman Catholic Church. After the death of Gregory XI in Rome, the cardinals were forced by a Roman mob to elect an Italian pope.
