Remeber the days of the old school yard...

So after staying up until 5 am waiting for an IM that never came (No, I won't elaborate, and yes, I am a little bitter) I figured I'd be able to sleep in, as my first class wasn't until 2 pm. Unfortunately, my mom totally Pearl Harbored me at 6 am, waking me up and asking if I would sub at the high school. Apparently, in my semi-conscious stupor, I said yes. For the next half hour or so, my parents continued to tell me to get up, though I had absolutely no idea why.

Finally, around 6:30, I was coherent enough to ask my dad what was up, and he informed me I was subbing, and I started throwing a hissy fit. I stormed around for the next 15 minutes, because at this point, there was really nothing I could do other than suck it up and go in. Not that this stopped me from cussin' all over the house and throwing my plush rocking-chair-thing around. But I soldiered on. By 7:10, I was at good ol' Wesport High, albeit begrudgingly.

The going rate for subs without teaching degrees, or maybe any bachelors degree -I'm not entirely sure- is $75, which is widdled down to $64.66 one Uncle Sam picks my pocket. Here's a recap of how I earned my pay today:
2 1/2 hours- Reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay- $24.87
1 1/2 hours- Watching half an episode of MacGyver and an episode of Dawson's Creek- $14.92
1 hour- Newspaper puzzles and comics- $9.95
40 minutes- Reading the sports section of the Boston Globe- $6.63
10 minutes- Actively supervising students/Staring blankly at the class- $1.66
5 minutes- Using restroom- $0.83
5 minutes- Writing assignments on the board- $0.83

I guess all told it wasn't so bad, aside from being brain numbingly boring and me being a total bitch all day from lack of sleep. The best thing is seeing the excitement on the student's faces when they realize they have absolutely nothing to do for the next 80-odd minutes. Oh sure, there's an assignment. But why would they do that, when they can have trite, inane high school type conversations that I get to listen in on. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm gonna pass out.
