Rewarding Stupidity

Alternative title for this entry: "Fucking magnets - how do they work?"

All Kiera Wilmot wanted to do was demonstrate her love of science. Hey, more power to her; I get that it's difficult to get young women interested in science. I just hope that future generations have better role models to look up to than this young lady.

When Kiera was looking for an idea for a science project to demonstrate chemical reactions, she decided to ask her friends for some ideas. Their BRILLIANT suggestion?
Someone suggested to me to combine aluminum foil and toilet bowl cleaner in a water bottle to make a volcano.
[From her own statement on ACLU website]

Did Kiera try to do any research on her own first, like looking up 'bottle bomb' on YouTube or Google to see what comes up? NOPE! She just decided to put one together on school property! And what happened? She was taken to the resource officer, asked to write out a statement, and told by school officials she may be arrested for making a bomb on school property. Ya think?!?

This video on YouTube specifically states in the description that the young men filming mixed toilet bowl cleaner and aluminum foil balls to make a bottle bomb. It's the second video on the list of bottle bomb videos on YouTube and has over 9,000 views.

You know what else? These bottle bombs can be so intense they can cause second degree burns. In Baltimore, Maryland, they were being stuffed in mailboxes. In Buffalo, New York, four teenagers were arrested for leaving a bottle bomb on the porch of an elderly resident. Luckily, she wasn't seriously injured.

I shudder to think if the ACLU would be so quick to jump to her defense had she mixed ammonia and bleach. Unfortunately, the way that people are reacting and cheering this idiot on, I fear the worst for the next generation of scientific minds.

crime, education
