Ga. Woman Rightly Demands Apology for Food Stamp Slam

Sep 27, 2012 22:50

On Wednesday, Yahoo! News reported about a Georgia woman named Cindy Nerger who was brought to tears by a Kroger grocery store manager because she uses food stamps.
The man's comment came after Nerger and two other store employees disagreed over whether her total purchase was eligible for food stamps - the employees had insisted that roughly $10 of her bill was not covered. She said the manager ultimately told the employees to "just give it to her."
It was after that the young man (calling him that is being generous) said, "Excuse me for working for a living and not relying on food stamps like you!"
Nerger said the reason she and her family - she is married with a daughter - must rely on food stamps is because her husband's carpentry business isn't profitable enough to support the family.

Meanwhile, Nerger must devote 12 hours every night to a dialysis treatment to combat her kidney disease, which she's struggled with since the age of 11. She's been on a kidney transplant list for five years and hopes that someday, after a successful transplant, she can become a working member of society.
What a class act! If only the Kroger store manager could learn something from her. The manager in question was transferred to a different store, where he will no doubt harass other women. A Kroger spokesperson contacted Nerger to apologize personally...and offered a measly $15 gift card to make up for the incident. She turned down their offer and asked instead for a personal apology from the manager who insulted her and requested that he be demoted and trained on how to correctly serve customers.

I know from my own personal experience that there are lazy people out there who would rather collect food stamps and government benefits than work for a living. However, Cindy Nerger isn't one of them, and I hope she gets her wish. The manager who insulted her and the executives at Kroger should be ashamed of themselves.
