FRC Guard Shot By LGBT Community Center Volunteer

Aug 15, 2012 23:16

Brought to you by the same people who cry and scream for gun control -- A guard at the Family Research Council, the same organization supported by Chik-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy, was shot this morning by Floyd Lee Corkins II. Corkins, 28, is a volunteer at The DC Center for the LGBT Community and has been for the past six months.

The most telling part of the incident (and a clue to his motivation): Corkins was carrying a bag with a Chik-Fil-A bag inside.

What's the opinion from the Liberal peanut gallery?

Michelle Goldberg (writer, The Daily Beast) - @michelleinbklyn: "Horrified by shooting at the Family Research Council. Absolutely despicable."
Reply from @joecommon: @michelleinbklyn you have to wonder ifthey were acting in self defense. FRC always shoots first.
Elon Green (writer, The Awl) - @elongreen: "*Please* stop shooting up Family Research Council. No need to turn these horrible, bigoted people into victims. Thanks!"
Chris Pulaski - @chrispulaski: "Thanks Floyd Corkins for making the far right hate us more! (I feel sorry for you that you thought this was the way to make yourself heard)

Over 20 LGBT groups have signed on to a joint statement in which they "utterly reject and condemn such violence." I noticed It Gets Better Project was not on that list. Hmmm...

I'm glad that there are people within that same mindset who are willing to condemn these actions. The Family Research Council shooting comes just weeks after a man named Wade Michael Page with ties to racist groups shot and killed six people in a Wisconsin Sikh temple before turning the gun on himself. There's no reason for this senseless violence. None. Zip. Zero. The lesson here: Freedom to express opinions is an amazing gift, and if people keep going apeshit over the smallest things, we're going to lose those freedoms.
