I really don't know what to think about Kagan's jokes during the Senate confirmation hearings today. On one hand, becoming a Supreme Court justice is a serious matter, and something that shouldn't be taken lightly. On the other hand, something needed to break because people keep falling asleep at these meetings.
When asked by Senator Graham where she was last Christmas when a suspected terrorist attempted to bomb a U.S.-bound airplane, Kagan replied, "Like all Jews, I was probably in a Chinese restaurant." (see the exchange
here) I'm sure the Jewish community and the Asian community both found that side-splitting...
From there, the yucks kept coming. At one point, Orrin Hatch and Patrick Leahy got into a spat about "fairness" in the line of questioning. When one of them quiped that the fighting was about keeping the proceedings from being "boring as hell", Kagan laughed it off and said it took the focus off her and she was "all for it."
Finally, after a long speech by Sen. Arlen Specter concerning the possibility of televised Supreme Court proceedings, Kagan said, "Televising would be a good idea...It means I'd have to get my hair done more often." (see the exchange
here)
Keep in mind that Kagan also
"joked" in January 2008 that she wasn't qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice (bonus: Cass Sunstein was even mentioned by the panel as a choice for SCOTUS Justice...God help us!).
