Saw locum GP again today. The sputum culture has come back, and they've found Haemophilus influenzae, which was resistant to amoxycillin, clarithromycin, and erythromycin. That would explain why the amoxycillin wasn't fixing everything, and taking a macrolide (clarithromycin, erythromycin, or azithromycin) probably wouldn't have helped anyway ( Read more... )

It may well be a pneumonia, although my breathing is freer than you'd generally expect for that. The sick note says just 'chest infection'. But I am in bed!

Loving reading your posts, for someone with a duff brain you're on better form than many would be at best! ;)

Doxy is another one they like giving me for teh SnotTM, hope you tolerate it OK especially at a hard and fast dosage. I generally don't drink on antibiotics by default as I figure I have such a low booze tolerance that my body probably doesn't need the extra work - not a problem for me as I rarely drink but can understand the "but I'd LIIIKE a glass o wine effect".

Liking your Monday appt strategy, I've done this before and I superstitiously reckon that gives the LURG fair warning which sometimes works :D

Hope you start to feel much better soonest but also remember after nasty bronchial nastiness that you may even post antibiotics feel cruddy for quite some time and to keep resting for a bit longer than you think you need to.

Thank you!

I like the superstition about appointments. I will take that up! (Although I feel obliged to note that the appointment today was made on a 'you can always cancel if you're better' basis ...)

Good advice about taking things easy even after I'm feeling better. My impulse is to dive back in full tilt to try to make up lost time on everything, but that way lies madness and a relapse with whatever opportunistic pathogen happens to be hanging around in the local environment.

:) I know about the recovery as last time I had a serious bronchial nasty I was on two rounds of antibiotics till the worst of the fevery crud was sorted so 2-3 weeks of proper ill then still rattling all the crap off my lungs for about 4+ weeks after. I reckon post-ill rattling might have been less bad if I'd had another week off work, but I had management x lots and HR claws in me threatening to sickness manage me out of my job...

I usually try do things which aren't work but are exertion e.g. walk to the shop, or do something physical to see how I get on. Also phased return type stuff is good, whether you can wfh for a few days or do shortened days for a while...

If a seasonal respiratory tract infection is worth having, it's worth doing properly.
