Less than the sum of the parts

Sometimes, when you put good things together, the result is actually much worse.

So, for example, on a combo of whim and busy-induced inattention, I ordered a cheese baguette for lunch today with cranberry sauce and sun-dried tomatoes. Cheese and cranberry sauce is a tasty combination. Cheese and sundried tomatoes is delicious. But all three together ... not so good, I discovered.

Similarly, living next to the village green is lovely. And living in a place with enough community spirit to muster a town band is awesome. And putting my kids to sleep is usually delightful too. But a mash up of all three ... again, not so good. Yes, I am trying to persuade small children to sleep while there literally is a brass band starting up right outside the bloody window.
