its obvious how everything in the book 1984 is happening right now:
the 3 major power regions of the world on edge with each other.
the disregard for the lower class.
constant and increasing government surveillance.
government secracy and control of the information.
sure it is not to the extreme that is in the book but the signs are there.
the only thing i could never correlate to real life was that in the book, the government has control over history and the way people see things in the past. It is safe to say that Americans have emotional and physcial amenesia to what really happened (just like in the book), but still the government doesn't edit our history...
...we do.
we are the tell all, record all, show all generation. we have blogs, websites, pictures and even streaming video of our lives... but we control and edit what we want people to see, what we want them to remeber about who we are.
just like winston going to work at his cubical each day to edit the past, so do we as we post about our lives and show the world what we are.
and when we don't like who we were, we simply delete it, and start a new.
unlike 1984, everything today is digital, only making it much easier to edit>undo our past.
the day the government begins to regulate the internet, the last quasi-free-market in exsistence, that is the day that our history will become a commodity.
that is when it will be 1984.
