its that moment that will give us some satisfaction in our lives. the chance to save someones life. few are presented with this chance and even fewer act on it.
today my roommate and i were sitting in the lounge of the dorms at brookhaven national lab when a chinese man started choughing and banging around the room. of course we ask if he's choking, as if a choking man could answer this question. i continued to watch while my roommate, emt and fireman, ran into action and grabbed him from behind, thrusting his fists into the mans adominal. on asain the size of a bear saving the life of another tiny asian man.
after 10 thrust and about 45 seconds, nothing was happening... i thought the food was supposed to fly out like the movies... 5 more thrusts and the man is down on his hands and knees and throws up a little. my roommate, paul, screams for someone to call 911 then reaches down to pick up the now collapsed asianman. 5 more thrusts and just as paul tells me to get ready to take over thrusting the man seems to have caught his breath.. "disregarded the 911" paul screams... thank god i think, there was no way i could do that.
turns out the man wasn't choking. he just ate a really hot pepper.
to make matters worse, once the man got a glass of soy milk, he came over to the lounge and complained about his ribs hurting and with a piece of pepper flake in his hand confronts my roommate and says "do you think i could choke on this tiny pepper? huh!"
not even a thank you.
