As far as I have heard, everyone I know is safe and sound. I haven't heard from everyone, but at least from most people who would have driven the bridge regularly.
This is highly strange for me and makes me long to be in Minneapolis at this time of crisis. The bridge connects the U of Minnesota and downtown, basically, and is one leg of I-35. As I-35 approaches the cities, it splits into two branches--I-35E and I-35W, with 35W going through Minneapolis and 35E going through St. Paul. Both go directly through their respective city. The bridge that collapsed is a main path to downtown, including the metrodome, the guthrie theatre, and many other great landmarks. In fact,
hiromasaki and I drove the bridge over Christmas when heading to a concert by the U.
On top of the tragedy and stress of the actual collapse, traffic in MN is going to be a bitch.
