She is a lady. Maria was raised with all the propriety and expectations of a lady from the 1940s. The way she carries herself and addresses others is straight from the school of etiquette that girls were required to take in her childhood. Being sent to an all girls Catholic School she does practice a slight faith and discipline brought on by the nuns always on her for being too eager to try new things. She’s stubborn to a fault and willing to put faith in her abilities and others when things should be impossible. Her curiosity is high and it often times gets her into a lot of trouble. She would be the first to start a fire in the name of scientific research (and still not learn from her mistake) only to try again until it succeeded.
Women in the 1940s were not allowed to be in positions of power and often kept out of the work place. The glass ceiling of today was nothing compared to the level of ‘girls in the kitchen’ view of then. It’s for this reason that she exercises the politeness and behaviors of a lady to counter balance the confidence and zeal for learning science. It’s a result of her obstacles that she is willing to not sleep at night and double check all of her work. It’s almost a level of obsession to get it right. The margin for error is small for a woman trying to be a doctor. In the end, she prefers work to socializing and tends to forget that she should get out once in a while.
She’s also not one to look at anyone with immediate interest in dating, mostly because she is a woman making it in a man’s world. It’s a personal desire to earn her triumphs even if it takes years longer to get there. She refuses to let anyone think she’d sleep her way to the top. It goes against her faith and upbringing to even consider such a thing.
On the other hand, she’s a loyal friend, fun, and tends to like causing a little trouble or playing jokes. Small ones. No need to get anyone hurt or upset. She’s a mother at heart because she loves the science of life. And watching a world plagued by The Depression, she’s seen the worst and made it out alive less her brother due to illness. Losing her brother was the reason she picked biological sciences and she works at it with intensity hoping not to lose anyone else. But a good doctor knows that mental health affects physical health so she tries her best to keep upbeat.
Maria also proves hard to shock. But after working in the science division of World War II, she’s seen horrible things and injuries that normal people have not. Being in the biological sciences, she’s often been the medic for the troops when the medics weren’t enough. And when you’ve worked on a group like the Howling Commandos, you learn fast that there is no impossibility to getting hurt. Being desensitized to this doesn’t make her care less, however, it only makes her more prepared to do more.

She is an advanced Bio-Chemist and building up her repertoire in Bio-Engineering. Her genius is mostly limited to her field, but she’s strong in problem solving and good at being a medic or general practitioner where necessary.

Hugging amongst friends is fine. Even colleagues. She's very proper though and likely won't react well to spontaneous romantic affection. This is an old school kind of girl and she may be independent but she likes traditional courting.

At best she can defend herself. She's efficient with guns, but she doesn't like them. For the most part, she would rather not start a fight or end it if at all possible.
