We had a crazy morning. I wake up and am sitting in the living room watching TV and putting off getting to campus. All of a sudden,
jizzmatic2000 walks in and says he thinks someone is breaking in
taschenrechner's house downstairs. He grabbed his Maglite and went out the door. I got up, put on some jeans and shoes and followed outside quickly. I got outside, downstairs, and around the corner of the house in time to see John (Jizz) playing tug of war over a black pillowcase with a strange man. A bicycle lay in our yard. (*I missed the beginning of this. Apparently the guy heard us moving around upstairs after just breaking in - John reacted quickly. He tried to tell John he lived there as John walked up, John said no he didn't and wanted to see what was in the bag, hence the tug-of-war.*) The guy saw me coming around the corner with my knife out in my hand. At this point, he pulled out a DVD player that was in the pillowcase and started saying that it wasn't even from this house (and it wasn't!). He saw I wasn't buying it and all of a sudden, John and I had him cornered against a fence with a knife and a Maglite. At this point, he put his hand behind his waist and said he had a gun and would kill us. This was repeated several times with bits of cursing and racial slurs in it. John and I weren't saying anything, but we didn't give ground. There was a standoff for a minute. He kept yelling, and I saw him turn slightly towards John. I saw that he wasn't holding anything behind his back. At this point, I decided to take him down. I put my knife back in my pocket, but as I moved towards him, he turned and jumped the fence. He had a fair build to him, but I would have made quick work of this guy in a fight. He ran off down the street, leaving his bike and the DVD player (taking the pillowcase).
John immediately calls the police. We give information, say we can ID, etc, blah blah blah. Call the landlords. Call Max (taschenrechner). We wait around and after a few minutes the cops get there. They start looking around, getting info, evidence, etc. They then tell us they have someone in custody that we can ID. We wait around, talking to them, and eventually, they come by with the guy. He comes out of the car yelling, saying it wasn't him, we were blind, anything he could. It was indeed the guy. Apparently he still had the pillowcase when they found him. After we ID'd him, they took him away and we finished our business with them.
The cops were awesome here. Not only did they catch the guy, but they told us he was on probation already - for BURGLARY! They also said it's eating Mobile up and they're more concerned with that than other crimes that aren't violent. So long story short, Max gets a new door, didn't lose anything, and the integrity of IHOM still stands ready for the zombie invasion.
Huzzah, chalk another up for the good guys! Mobile is one criminal shorter, thanks to us and Mobile's finest.
