OK first off this is not a rant about smoking in any shape or form, you desire to smoke is your own and I won't stop you of course; I personally don't and strongly doubt I will ever do such. Now onto my rant itself.
The government is banning having cigarettes on display in shops as to try and stop under-age smoking as, supposedly, the large displays draw the children in making them want to smoke at a young age and so forth. Well you know what I say to that?
BULLLLLSHIIIIT!
You know what that does? It makes smoking more appealing because 'oh, it's wrong and they hide it so it has to be good some how!' Under-age smokers will continue to smoke because they want to, they will still get their older friends/family/random bum in the street to get them for them all the same like they have been doing so for years. The reason, for the most part, they smoke is because they see their family and friends smoking and so want to copy them, or to fit in with the crowd. It is not from advertisement of such an item as the British government already banned them from advertising in any way, including on race cars.
So their claims on why they have to do this new ban on open display is foolish, a waste of time for everyone, and in the end pointless. The core of the problem is once again being ignored for easy to instigate and control quick fixes.
