For those interested

A couple of things tonight caused this post. I'm not going to get into any details, for all sorts of reasons. I'm putting this here partly as introspection, partly to open a window to my head to some other people, and maybe to pass on a little of that to other people. Take it for what it's worth. If you can't be bothered to read this whole post ( Read more... )

I like learning about how "abstract principles" taught to people are applied. Especially when you can say something about the results.

I think that a lot of modern "intellectuals" are too suspicious of everything and would rather criticize than try. So seeing the results of living by principles is a good thing.

I think most people have some sort of internal guiding principles, but few can articulate what they want to say in the manner he did.

I don't know if I could lay out a flat set of rules like he did, I've tried to explain my worldview/motivations before, but never been that fluent in translating feelings/instinct/reasoning to words.

I honestly don't know how accurate linguistically those principles are in reference to how I live my life.

I guess I'm just afraid to say what's on my mind, and I said what felt right - consequences be damned.

I agree. I think everyone has some form of guiding principles. I'd accept it as an axiom that they do because it's nigh impossible to live in pure chaotic chance.

I don't know if I could or would lay out a flat set of rules. While one can't live in chaos, life is about change, and guidelines change. But that's my personal view of it. I have a guideing ethos, ethic and morality, but they are almost all subject to change. And the principles that don't change are subject to reinterpretation due to situation.

I think the personal guidelines laid out are good in their generality. They can adapt to new and different situations.

The more I think about it, the more I can't really define the above as a "flat set of rules." It's too inherently contradictory and far too vague. More like a set of fortune cookies.

They are principles. Boil them down to their crux and you have a set of guiding principles that can adapt to situations. You have basically defined yor ethic. From those you derive your morals. It seems a good system. Just don't let the system become the rule. That's the trap many fall into.

Bad turn of phrase on my part.

rough guidelines would be more appropriate than flat set of rules. Just happened to be the phrase my brain processed.

I don't know, I thought what you wrote made sense. You can't write out a flat set of guidelines for yourself. Made sense to me :)
