Goodnight, Satellite Man

Died. Arthur C. Clarke. 90. Science fiction writer whose humanistic approach to science and technology lead to such classics as Childhood's End, 2001: A Space Odyssey (and its accompanying film), Rendevous With Rama, and numerous other novels and short stories over his 60+ year career. He was the winner of multiple Hugo and Nebula awards for his writing, and was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America. A scientist as well as an author, Clarke was the first to conceptualized the communications satellite in an article written for Wireless World in 1945; geostationary orbit (22,240 miles above the earth) was officially named the Clarke Orbit by the International Astronomical Union.

He was an avid diver, and since 1956 has lived in Sri Lanka.

Arthur C. Clarke is one of my favorite authors, and he'll be sorely missed.
