This morning, I had a very interesting dream that took no more than 9 minutes of real-world time. My alarm went off, I hit the snooze button (which lasts for only 9 minutes) and between that and the next alarm, I dreamed up a fairly detailed world, and a lengthy period of time within it.
The centerpiece of the dream was a natural wonder that I and the other characters in the dream had traveled to. There was a wind storm very high in a particular part of the atmosphere of a world that we were on, and massive boulders had been caught in it for for longer than anyone had records. Although there were no strong winds on the ground, any ship approaching the area would be blown off course and destroyed, so we had to elsewhere and hike up to the observation point.
The observation point had a wide, easy path leading up to it, but was on the top of a set of crags, with no visible vegetation, and very high up. We got a glimpse of the wonder as we were walking up, seeing the boulders being blown around by the wind, but didn't really get the full effect of it until we got to the peak, which was directly beneath it.
The observation point was a wide cave with a marble tiled floor, natural ceiling and a large hole carved through the top. It was here, lying on my back with the cool marble under me that I was able to get the perfect view. Through the circular hole, I saw that the boulders had a very specific pattern. There were concentric rings of the boulders that were spinning. The rotation of the circles were independent, and they would change speed and sometimes slow to nothing, then switch directions. Their configuration sometimes looked like a set of concentric rings, in a bullseye pattern, and sometimes in one on top of another, creating the impression of a tunnel, receding away from my vantage point on the ground up into the sky.
A boulder much larger than the ones making up the rings was visible, and would always be centered in the ring farthest away. Although it appeared to be circled by this ring, it was in reality, much higher, and only looked like that from the vantage point of the observation point. The last part of the wonder was only visible through the hole of the observation point from time to time. It was a rough, round disk shaped rock that looked to be made from a different material than the others. This element would orbit in and out around the rest. It was the lowest of all of the rocks, and although it appeared to be the largest, it was one of the smaller pieces. The fact that it was lowest also kept it from knocking into any of the others, as its movements were wild and elliptical, contrasting the ordered and deliberate movements of the rest of the wonder.
There was more to the dream happening before and after this point, but none of it really seemed very significant. The image of the natural wonder, and the hours I and the others spent reflecting on it in the dream really stuck with me though, and I felt the need to record it somewhere.
