Had an interesting dream this morning.

Mar 18, 2008 11:14

It wasn’t interesting in and of itself (it was about laying in bed, watching The Flintsones on a TV which isn't actually in my room, but was in the dream...), but in that it took place within a span of exactly 9 minutes and was both intense and very complex.

At 7:30, my alarm went off and I hit it. At 7:39, my alarm went off and I got up to take a shower. Between these two moments, my brain constructed a complex world which held together. It wove the story of a cartoon show that made as much sense as a cartoon show can be expected to (Fred had only enough rocks to pay for either car insurance or beer, so he needed to make a scheme to get more). It handled enough planning and simulation that I would simply treat the whole incident as a memory if there weren’t a few points that tipped me off to its being a dream.

In the dream, I was simultaneously getting ready for work, which in my dream was a coding job on the campus of Case, the college I graduated from. I allowed myself to watch the cartoon because the clock said that it was 7:30, when I didn’t need to be to work until 9:00. I couldn’t figure out why I had set my alarm so early when it is only a 5 minute bike ride from my apartment to the campus.

Through the course of the dream, I watched about 2/3 of a 30 minute cartoon (I remember specifically glancing at the clock a number of times in my dream to make sure that I wasn’t getting off schedule), I got dressed and ready for work and I ate some breakfast. I remember hurrying to toast the pop tart I ate during commercials so I wouldn’t miss any of the show. I remember the minutia of my schedule within the dream with a clarity that is greater than that of the events that took place in the groggy fog present just after I had woken up.

Just as Fred snapped the top off of his (uninsured) car and drove it off a cliff, 7:39 rolled around and my real alarm went off. I got up and I showered, and because I had hit the alarm, I did not have time to eat a pop tart. Also, I did not watch The Flintstones, although I would have liked to see how Fred managed to get the car repaired when he spent all his money on beer.
