Well hey there, LJ. It's been a long while. I suppose with the advents of Twitter and Facebook there really hasn't been much need to really write long meaningful entries nowadays. Considering that I've written here on and off for the past 10 years I couldn't bring myself to just give it up. Even though writing isn't an activity I usually favor, it does make for a nice occasional mental exercise. I suppose there hasn't really been much to say in terms of progress for the past six months or so until just recently.
Thus far I've been greatly enjoying my move up here to Fairbanks, Alaska. It's an amazing location considering that it's the northernmost major US city (not a big one at that) which is surrounded by hundreds of miles of wilderness mostly held in sway by the cooler temperatures found in a subarctic region. It still does get pretty warm when summer comes around (happening now) but thankfully not as wretchedly hot or humid as it has in Maine. No surprise I certainly enjoyed the cold dark winter, finding myself quite capable of handling a -40F day. Indeed I found it comforting that the stillness and tranquility it brought, and boy did I ever sleep so good! This isn't to say that summer isn't without its wow factor with daylight persisting throughout the day, currently setting at 11:30pm before rising once again at 4am. When the summer solstice comes around there's no night, heh.
So last I wrote I was renting a 3 bedroom 2.5 bathroom townhouse on the northern part of Fairbanks. This was only temporary since I was looking for an established place with a short lease, plus I needed the extra space to spread everything I had out and perform some further trimming down. Today I dwell within a one bedroom apartment located in the central part of the city, and I've been loving it. It reminds me of my dorm days back in college, but roomier. That's a good thing since I had positive experiences, but I also enjoy the smaller space. It's more efficient. But what's more is that I really like the location, being on the third floor with a great view of the courtyard and the mountains beyond (beautiful cloudscapes!). It also has another nice perk which is…..
….I work here! To be honest, I really wouldn't have imagined taking up the role as a maintenance technician given my druthers to seek something in the engineering field, but I've come to really enjoy it and the tons of hands-on experience it's brought. I guess it could be something tangential to engineering due to some technical aspects, especially with future advancement, but for the most part it's blue collar. This is actually quite fine for me because it keeps you moving and active. There's been a nice variety of things to do to keep me engaged, but overall it feels "right". From changing out electrical outlets to re-caulking a bathtub to replacing linoleum flooring it's been a wonderful confidence-building and educational experience. Having cool coworkers helps too. Suffice to say I come back home tuckered, but satisfied. Sleep comes pretty easily, heh.
And on that note, I'd best be doing that in preparation for the new work week. Good night, LJ!
