San Jose Mercury News reports:
PACIFICA, Calif.-Earth Day commemorations at Pacifica's Oceana High School might have been a bit subdued after thieves made off with more than 100 solar panels.
Police say sometime between March 24 and April 5 thieves pulled off 108 panels from the school's roof.
The panels, recently put in place, were installed at a cost of nearly $44,000.
An administrator at the school says the panels were probably stolen when the school was on an "interim week" schedule, a period when fewer students and teachers are on campus.
Pacifica police Sgt. Daniel Steidle says any possible witnesses might have thought people on the roof were workers finishing up the installation work, rather than thieves taking the panels.
No security system protected the 25-pound glass-and-silicon panels.
